The Roan Mountain ridge is approximately five miles long and straddles the North Carolina / Tennessee border. The beautiful terrain consists of several grassy balds, fields of Catawba Rhododendron and forests of dark green Balsams. Elevation at the highest point on Roan High Knob is 6,285 feet. The Appalachian Trail traverses the Roan Mountain ridge and provides a breathtaking panorama for hikers on their way from Georgia to Main. This is one of my favorite destinations along the Blue Ridge Mountains in Western North Carolina. Every trip to Roan Mountain is a memorable adventure with countless photo opportunities.
